My reviews for Nick of Time, Spy Game, and Open Water

Can you tell I was bored this weekend? I have watched 3 movies, and it is only Saturday...
Well, here goes:

Nick of Time:
This is a "real time" thriller with Johnny Depp. "Real time" refers to the fact that the movie is 1.5 hours long, and takes place in 1.5 hours, so every minute on screen is a minute of "movie time."
The movie was pretty good. I don't think Depp is good in this kind of format (in this movie, he is your Average Joe, Depp is better at playing Edward ScissorHands or Willy Wanka), but he wasn't too bad. The action was typical Hollywood, and actually had me on the edge of my seat. One problem was that the ending kind of just ended. There was no dénouement. While the ending was resolved, it did it quickly. Think Con Air. Over all, not a bad action flick when you are bored.

Spy Game:
With Robert Redford and Brad Pit, how can you go wrong? I mean, if you have Hollywood's two sexiest men in one movie, can it be bad?
Well, this movie was pretty good. It was a good thriller and had a nice pace. It was well shot, in many exotic locations, and well directed. The plot, though, was a bit much. It seamed like they wanted to cram a whole book into a 2 hour movie, and I felt like they were force feeding me information.
Overall, a great movie, one for the guys.

Open Water:
For a movie that was made on $130,000 (and later bought for $2.5 million, a 20 fold increase), it wasn't bad. (On a side note: The Blair Witch Project is "in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Top Budget:Box Office Ratio" (for a mainstream feature film). The film cost $22,000 to make and made back $240.5 million, a ratio of $1 spent for every $10,931 made." -IMDB.com)
Any who, the movie was good. You could tell it was filmed using digital cameras, but that didn't take anything away from the movie. The entire movie has very little plot; it takes them 30 minutes to get in the water, and most of that time was dead time. But once they were in the water, the suspense was good (especially the night scene). The guy I was watching it with almost wet his pants...
Spoiler area: (select the text to read the spoilers)
I didn't like the ending. It was like Perfect Storm, where it ends in them all dead. I mean, how do they know about ANYTHING that went on?? It was based on a true story, but 50% of the movie was made up in the screen writer's mind!

Boobie Alert!! Yup, thats right, boobies. In the first 10 minutes, there is a very sudden shot of (almost) full frontal nudity. This scene was both unexpected, and unnecessary. If you ever watch it, it comes right after they are brushing their teeth.
Over all, not too bad... worth seeing once.

Well, I hope I enlightened you today. See you all tomorrow!

Matthew

Okay, I'm a little worried here, first you say "if you have Hollywood's two sexiest men in one movie, can it go bad?" Then you call it "one for the guys." Is that "one for the guysss" with a noodle wrist and limp handshake? You're scaring me bro....

Seriously though, you didn't really say much about the movies. I really liked the way that you said what aspects you liked and didn't like, but you didn't mention what the movie was about. I mean, some of us are employed in he military and are below the poverty line because we don't have TV and haven't seen any of the trailers for the last 57.5 million movies. Also, thanks for the "boobie alert," that's another movie I'll avoid. Oh, and thanks for not spoiling the endings, if you do want some endings soiled- er, spoiled then check out my reviews (different movies). Thanks M@....
