So the iPhone 3G is set to launch in 5 hours... not here of course, in New Zealand, where it will be released at midnight local time, which is 7 AM here (exactly 24 hours before it is available on the Eastern Seaboard).

Don't worry, I am not planning on going out and buying an iPhone right away... at least not on the first day. As people said, it would not be smart for me to buy one when I don't have a steady job. So, I plan soon on getting a steady job (if I don't have something lined up in a week I will go back to UPS), THEN I can get an iPhone.

But really, the phone I have is only getting worse... the hinge is getting bad (sticking open, sticking closed), and the battery won't last 24 hours. Let's just say that I am looking forward to a phone that will correctly sync with my contacts. Oh, and it will do e-mail and everything else that I need.

Yes it is $35 extra a month just for the data plan, but I think that I will use it... a lot. Then again, that is more than I am paying for home internet, and THAT internet is sure faster than 3G speeds!

Oh well, the price you pay so that you can have everything that you don't need in your pocket!

from the Austin Statesman:

Expect a longer wait in line for the iPhone
By Steve Pounds | Thursday, July 10, 2008, 05:47 PM
More iPhone food for thought.

If you’re planning to line up for the 8 a.m. launch tomorrow of the 3G iPhone, don’t expect a simply in-and-out procedure.

To keep people from activating the phone on their own (remember, the young hacker who beat the technology in the week or so after the initial iPhone launch last year), the stores are requiring activation in the store. Last year, you took them home and activated them through iTunes.

So if you have to fill out paperwork at the Apple Store before a store clerk activates your new phone, it certainly will take significantly longer. Last year, one iPhone customer left the store every 20 seconds, according Fortune.com.

Apple and AT&T are even telling customers to go in the day before and fill out paperwork so they can quickly activate their phone on Friday.

And on another front, the tip that only one iPhone will be sold to each customer isn’t entirely true. We’ve heard that customers ordering AT&T’s family plan will be allowed to purchase more than one device.

Long lines in Austin area for new iPhone

We're receiving reports from people waiting in lines that there are some long waits for those who want the latest iPhone. The phone went on sale at 8 a.m.

I asked people on Twitter, which is a service that allows people to write very short blogs (less than 140 characters each), to tell us what they're seeing.

Here's are the reports, with person's Twitter name before each report:

8:33 a.m., karmajunkie: there were about 50 people lined up outside the at&t store at 183a and 1431 in Cedar Park... suckers. store doesn't open til 9.

8:24 a.m., stepwinder: 100 in line at south austin att store. Brodie and Slaughter.

8:18 a.m., Natanyap: The line at the AT&T store in downtown ATX was AROUND THE BUILDING to get a new iPhone. Amazing.

Toodark: at&t store only had like 35 iPhones total, so now I'm in line at the Barton Creek Apple store with the hundreds of other ppl in line.

8 a.m., ColeH: I just drove by AT&T store @ Mopac & 290W. At least 60 people in line.

7:57 a.m., Maczter: Around 100-120 at AT&T on Research.

7:55 a.m., batwood: about 50 ppl in line at ATT store in Georgetown

7:54 a.m., ricbenavidez: long line at southpark meadows (on slaughter - not sure count). close to 2 dozen folks at 5th and lamar store

7:53 a.m., dulcena: about 40 in bastrop now. Organized & cheerful but getting warm! (with photo!)

jyarbrough: pprox. 75 in line at ATT SW Pkwy location

Note (8:37 a.m.): I'm receiving updates from various Twitter users that the rush to activate all these phones is slowing the system down. Some stores are sending customers out with their new phones not being activated. That should help get the lines moving.
